TOWNS & VILLAGES C-I
CAJIZ
Cajiz is situated 27 kilometres east of Malaga and 5 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast at Almayate and Benajarafe, in
the unspoilt eastern region of Andaucia - an area called the Axarquia. The village has a population of 640 and an altitude
of 175 metres. A small village, Cajiz has a couple of excellent bars and restaurants and has easy access to nearby larger
towns and facilities.

CALETA DE VELEZ
La Caleta de Velez is the mid-coastal point of the Axarquia. It is a pretty fishing town only 30 kilometres
from Malaga with superb beaches, an impressive marina and the 18-hole Baviera golf course. Caleta means bay in Spanish and
the name of this town literally means The Bay of Velez-Malaga; Velez-Malaga being the capital of the Axarquia.

CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO
Canillas de Aceituno lies 51 kilometres from Malaga and 21 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar and has
a population of 2,800. The town is situated on the scenic Mudejar Architecture Route, at 645 metres altitude in the
foothills of the Sierra Tejada mountain range, on the highest mountain in Axarquia, La Maroma which reaches 2,080 metres.
The natural spring from the mountain attracts people from far away due to a belief that if the pure water is drunk, illness
is prevented. Nearby is the spectacular canyon of the River Almachares where picnic and bar-be-que areas are provided. The
nearby Cave of La Fajara and the Rahíges Nature Reserve are also worth visiting. Spectacular views of the coastline, Lake
Vinuela and mountains are enjoyed from Canillas de Aceituno.

CANILLAS DE ALBAIDA
Canillas de Albaida is situated 52 kilometres from Malaga and 21 kilometres from the coast at Torrox Costa, at
an altitude of 575 metres on the Sierra Almijara mountain range. It lies within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of
Sun and Wine, and has a population of 700. The village is surrounded by high mountains of which the Atalaya and Verde
mountains dominate a landscape of pine and oak trees; the habitat of eagles, mountain goats and wild boars. In the river
valleys grapes, olives and tropical fruits are grown. Nearby there is the protected area of the Acantilados de Maro Nature
Reserve.

CHILCHES
Chilches is a small village set back from Chilches Beach, 12 kilometres to the east of Malaga, between
Benajarafe and Rincon de la Victoria in the region of Axarquia. Chilches has a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere with a good
community spirit and several bars and restaurants. In recent years, new villas have been built in the surrounding areas
enjoying the same stunning sea views as the village itself.

COLMENAR
Colmenar is located at the most westerly point of the Axarquia, on the scenic Route of
Olive Oil and Mountains. It is situated 35 kilometres from Malaga and 35 kilometres from the coast at Rincon de la Victoria.
The town has an altitude of 700 metres and a population of 3,600. The foothills of the Sierra de Camaroles lie to the north
and Mount Miraflores to the south. The economy of the town is based on agriculture, livestock farming and several food and
drink industries including the production of honey. In the surrounding countryside there are numerous beehives from which
the town name was derived ('colmena' is Spanish for beehive).

COMARES
A stunningly pretty town, Comares lies within the area of Axarquia, situated 25 kilometres inland from the
coastal town of Torre del Mar and 35 kilometres from Malaga, with a population of 1,700. It is perched on top of a conical
hill at a height of 740 metres with coastal, lake and mountain views. Comares is visible from the coast during the day as a
cluster of white village houses and by night as a string of lights. The town is a point on the scenic Route of the Raisin.

COMPETA
Another very pretty town, Competa is situated 49 kilometres from Malaga and 18 kilometres from the coast at
Torrox Costa, at an altitude of 636 metres. It lies within the area of Axarquia in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara, on
the scenic Route of Sun and Wine, and has a population of 2,500. Among many annual festivals, on the 15th August there is a
popular fiesta to celebrate the 'Night of the Wine'; flamenco and other music and dance accompany the free-flowing wine.

CORUMBELA
Corumbela is situated 49 kilometres from Malaga and 16 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar at an
altitude of 590 metres. The village lies within the area of Axarquia on the scenic Mudejar Architecture Route. Corumbela`s
origins are unknown but it is thought that its name was derived from "La Paloma" (the dove), which the village was
so called by the Romans.

CUTAR
Cutar lies 32 kilometres from Malaga and 22 kilometres from the coast at Rincon de la Victoria, at an altitude
of 331 metres. The village is located within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of the Raisin, and has a population
of 700. Of Moorish origin, the village has typical narrow streets and white-washed houses. Cutar is derived from the Arabic
name Cautzar (paradise fountain). At the exit to the village, the remains of a unique fountain from the Moorish era is situated.
The 16th century church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación in Cutar has a beautiful Baroque side chapel.

DAIMALOS
Daimalos is situated 47 kilometres from Malaga and 14 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar at an
altitude of 420 metres. This small, attractive, whitewashed village has a population of approximately 50 and lies within the
municipality of the village of Arenas within the area of Axarquia on the scenic Route of Mudejar Architecture.

EL BORGE
El Borge lies 28 kilometres from Malaga and 17 kilometres from the coast at Rincon de la Victoria, at an
altitude of 237 metres. Located within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of the Raisin, the village has a population
of 1,200. El Borge is situated beside a ravine on the banks of the River Borge which runs through the village. Of Moorish
origin, the village has narrow and stepped streets with white-washed houses. The name of the village is derived from the
Arabic name El Burch (the turret).

FRIGILIANA
Frigiliana is situated 56 kilometres from Malaga and 7 kilometres north and inland from the coast at Nerja to
which it is linked by several daily buses. It lies at an altitude of 435 metres within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic
Route of Sun and Wine, and has a population of 2,200. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra de Enmedio, a southern extension of the
Almijara mountain range, Frigiliana is an extremely pretty village which has received several awards for conservation and
beauty. It enjoys spectacular countryside as well as wonderful sea views and good access to the coast.

IZNATE
Iznate lies 29 kilometres from Malaga and 5 kilometres from the coast at Benajarafe which is midway between
Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 311 metres. It is situated within the area of Axarquia, on the
scenic Route of Sun and Avocadao, and has a population of 1,000. The village is surrounded by small hills and is irrigated by the River Iznate. It
has wonderful panoramic views over mountain ranges.
