ALCAUCIN
Alcaucin is a chocolate-box pretty village, located 54 kilometres from Malaga and 25 kilometres from the
Mediterranean coast at Torre del Mar. At an altitude of 510 metres, Alcaucin is situated on the lower western slope of La
Maroma in the Sierra Tejeda mountain range. It lies within the unspoilt eastern region of Andalucia - an area called the
Axarquia - on the scenic Route of Olive Oil and Mountains, and has a population of 1,500. The nearby small village of Venta
Baja is situated within the municipality of Alcaucin.

ALFARNATE
Alfarnate is the most northerly village of Axarquia, situated 49 kilometres from
Malaga and 45 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar. It lies on a fertile plain sheltered and hidden by the surrounding
Sierra Alhama and Sierra El Jobo mountains at an altitude of 925 metres, and has a population of 1,600. Against the
mountain backdrop, the flat cultivated land forms a contrasting scene. The economy is based on agriculture, the
main products of which are olives, almonds, chickpeas and cereals. The village is on the scenic
Route of Olive Oil and Mountains.

ALFARNATEJO
Alfarnatejo, in the north of Axarquia, is situated 50 kilometres from Malaga and
42 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar. It is surrounded by mountains, the highest of which are Mount Chamizo to the
west and El Gallo to the east, both at 1,637 metres. The village itself has an altitude of 858 metres, a population of 500
and lies on the scenic Route of Olive Oil and Mountains.

ALGARROBO
Algarrobo is situated 37 kilometres east of Malaga. It has four urban nuclei: Algarrobo Costa, Mezquitilla and
Lagos on the coast, and Algarrobo Pueblo 4 kilometres inland and 85 metres above sea level. It lies within the area of
Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Wine, and has a residential population of 4,600 which increases with tourism along
the coast during the summer months.

ALHAMA DE GRANADA
Alhama de Granada is an ancient spa town located approximately 53 kilometres from Granada with 6,000
inhabitants. Not far to the northeast of Axarquia, it perches at the top of a ravine where the Rio Alham carves through
otherwise rolling countryside. It is a picturesque location and has therapeutic thermal springs just outside of the
town.

ALMACHAR
Almachar lies 26 kilometres from Malaga, 15 kilometres from the coast at Rincon de la Victoria and 14
kilometres from Velez-Malaga. At an altitude of 230 metres, this very pretty village is located within the area of
Axarquia, on the scenic Route of the Raisin, and has a population of 2,100. The name of the town is derived from Arabic and means "meadows".

ALMAYATE
Almayate is a coastal town situated 25 kilometres from Malaga, between Benajarafe and Torre del Mar. Almayate has two distinct
urban areas - Almayate Bajo and Almayate Pueblo. In addition to these is an area surrounding Almayate Pueblo known as Almayate
Alto where small hamlets of houses and villas are located.

AÑORETA GOLF
A coastal course with fabulous sea and mountain views, Anoreta lead the way in new golf construction east of
Malaga when it was opened in 1990. Designed by Jose Maria Canizares for all types of player, its great attraction is water
obstacles. A village of new villas, townhouses and apartments has been built around the golf course. (18 hole / par 72 / 5,976 metres).

ARCHEZ
Archez lies within a natural arena within a beautiful valley setting. It is 51 kilometres from Malaga and 25
kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 435
metres. The village is located on the foothills of the Sierra Almijara within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic
Mudejar Architecture Route, and has a population of 400.

ARENAS
Arenas is situated below the ruins of the Castle Bentomiz which is a Moorish
fortress built over a Roman site. The village lies 44 kilometres from Malaga and 13 kilometres from the coast at Torre del
Mar, at an altitude of 416 metres. It is located within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Mudejar Architecture Route,
and has a population of 1,400.

BAVIERA GOLF
Situated in Caleta de Velez with magnificent views to the sea and mountains, this coastal course has been
designed for all types of player. Baviera has interesting par 5s on a course with abundant water, designed by Jose Maria Canizares and
opened in 2001. A village of new villas, townhouses and apartments has been built around the golf course, all situated just
metres away from the Caleta beach, marina and fishing port. (18 hole / par 72 / 5,910 metres).

BENAGALBON
Benagalbon is within the municipality of Rincon de la Victoria and is just two kilometres inland from the
beaches at Rincon, 12 kilometres from Malaga and is also close to the 18-hole Añoreta Golf course. Benagalbon was founded by
Moors who perfected innovative agricultural techniques for crop cultivation, in particular creating wealth from vineyards.

BENAJARAFE
Benajarafe is a coastal village, located 14 kilometres to the east of Malaga, between Rincon de la Victoria
and Torre del Mar, in the region of Axarquia. A traditional fishing village with catches of mainly anchovy and sardines,
Benajarafe has a population of approximately 2,000, sandy beaches and safe clean bathing, plenty of restaurants serving
srumpious food in delightful surroundings, an excellent garden centre and all usual facilities.

BENAMARGOSA
Benamargosa lies 37 kilometres from Malaga and 14 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, on a flat area
at an altitude of 100 metres surrounded by small hills. It is situated within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic
Route of Sun and Avocado, and has a population of 2,000. The village is of Moorish style with narrow streets and white-
washed houses. The main products of the municipality are citrus fruits, olives, vines, avocados, mangoes and chirimoyas.

BENAMOCARRA
Benamocarra lies 33 kilometres from Malaga and 9 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, at an altitude of
126 metres. It is situated within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Avocado, and has a population of
2,800. The parish church of Santa Ana is 16th century, built in Gothic style with a Mudejar tower. Close to the church is
the house where composer Eduardo Ocón was born in 1833.

BENAQUE
Benaque is a small hamlet located 29 kilometres from Malaga and 11 kilometres from the coast at Benajarafe or
Almayate, at an altitude of 240 metres in the region of Axarquia. Benaque was the birthplace of the poet, novelist and
dramatist Salvador Rueda (1857-1933) whose work greatly featured Andalucian themes and to whom a small museum is dedicated
in the village.
